IHG Annual Lounge Membership: How It Works and When It Is Worth Choosing

IHG Annual Lounge Membership is one of the most interesting benefits in IHG One Rewards because it can turn an ordinary room booking into a much more valuable hotel stay. It is not an elite-status benefit in its own right: it is a Milestone Reward that can be selected after reaching certain qualifying-night thresholds.

How do you earn IHG Annual Lounge Membership?

IHG currently offers Annual Lounge Membership as a choice at the 40-night and 70-night Milestone Rewards. At both milestones, members receive two reward choices, although Annual Lounge Membership can only be selected once at each milestone.

Once selected, the membership is valid for the remainder of that calendar year plus the following 12 months. That timing matters. Selecting it earlier in a calendar year can give considerably more than 12 months of actual use.

What does it include?

Where an eligible hotel has a Club Lounge, the registered member receives lounge access for:

  • the member; and
  • one additional registered hotel guest.

There is no stated limit on the length of the stay. The benefit must be used in conjunction with a hotel stay, so it is not a standalone lounge pass that can be used simply for drinks or a meal.

What do hotel lounges normally provide?

The exact offering varies significantly by hotel. Depending on the property, a lounge may offer breakfast, afternoon tea, evening drinks and canapés, all-day soft drinks, snacks, quieter seating and a useful place to work.

That variation is important. A strong InterContinental lounge serving breakfast, afternoon tea and a substantial evening offering can make the membership extremely valuable. A more limited lounge with only soft drinks and a light evening snack obviously changes the calculation.

Does Annual Lounge Membership cover children?

The published benefit is for the member plus one additional registered guest. Families should therefore not assume that a lounge will admit an entire family simply because one adult holds Annual Lounge Membership.

Individual hotels may be more generous, but this should be treated as a hotel-specific concession rather than an entitlement. It is worth contacting the property before arrival if lounge access for children or additional guests matters to the booking.

Can you use it on a Reward Night?

The lounge benefit is attached to the member rather than being dependent on booking a Club room. In practice, that is one of its biggest attractions: it can add lounge access to a standard qualifying stay without paying the normal premium for a Club room.

As always, check the individual hotel and rate conditions before relying on lounge access, particularly at properties with unusual lounge arrangements or partner-brand restrictions.

What is the potential value?

There is no single cash value because Club-room supplements vary dramatically. The best way to assess it is to look at the difference between the room you would otherwise book and the cheapest room that includes lounge access.

If a Club room costs £80 more per night and you use the lounge on five nights during the membership year, the theoretical saving is already £400. At luxury hotels the difference can be considerably higher.

That does not mean every lounge visit is genuinely worth the full Club-room supplement. The useful question is what you would otherwise have spent on breakfast, drinks and evening food, and how much you value the extra space and convenience.

Annual Lounge Membership or a Confirmable Suite Upgrade?

At 40 nights, the decision can be particularly interesting because both benefits may be available as Milestone choices. A Confirmable Suite Upgrade can transform one stay of up to five nights. Annual Lounge Membership can potentially improve many stays over a much longer period.

For someone who regularly stays at InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and other properties with worthwhile lounges, the lounge membership can have substantial repeat value. Someone with only one or two eligible lounge stays ahead may prefer the certainty and space of a suite upgrade instead.

Important limitations

  • Lounge access only helps at properties that actually have an eligible lounge.
  • The benefit covers the member plus one additional registered guest.
  • It cannot be gifted or transferred.
  • It is not available at InterContinental Alliance Resorts in Las Vegas and Macau.
  • At participating Iberostar Beachfront Resorts, the benefit can provide access to Star Prestige facilities, but those facilities may have their own age restrictions.

Is IHG Annual Lounge Membership worth choosing?

For frequent IHG guests, it can be one of the strongest Milestone Rewards in the programme. Its advantage is repeatability: unlike a one-off points bonus or a single suite upgrade, it can add meaningful value to every eligible lounge stay during its validity period.

The key is to choose it with future stays in mind. Before making the selection, look at the hotels you are genuinely likely to visit, check whether they have lounges and compare the normal cost of a Club room with the room you would otherwise book.
